Die nun vierte FAI Weltmeisterschaft in der Klasse F3f wurde von 7. – 13. Oktober 2018 auf der Insel Rügen in Deutschland ausgetragen. Nach 2012 war die Gegend rund um Kap Arkona bereits zum zweiten Mal Austragungsort für dieses Event.

Für Österreich haben sich entsprechend des gültigen Qualifikationsmodus Philipp Stary, Stefan Fraundorfer und Martin Ziegler qualifiziert. Martin Ziegler hat seine Nominierung zurückgelegt und Lukas Gaubatz rückte an seiner Stelle nach. Meine Wenigkeit wurde wieder als Teammanager nominiert. Als Helfer waren diesmal Nicole Dornhofer und Franz Prasch mit von der Partie. Das österreichische F3f-Team 2018 bestand somit aus einem guten Mix aus Neulingen und "alten Hasen": Für Philipp war es die erste WM-Teilnahme überhaupt. Stefan Fraundorfer konnte bereits auf erfolgreiche WM-Teilnahmen in der FAI-Klasse F5d zurückblicken, in F3f war es seine erste Teilnahme. Für Lukas Gaubatz und mich war dies nun bereits die vierte Weltmeisterschaft in der Klasse F3f.

Das gesamte Team traf am Freitag, dem 5. Oktober in unserer Unterkunft in Dranske ein. Gleich am selben Abend ging es für uns zum „Processing“, der offiziellen Überprüfung und Abnahme der Modelle. Jeder Pilot durfte drei Modelle zur Weltmeisterschaft anmelden. Stefan verwendete drei Stück seiner Eigenkonstruktion „Impuls 2“. Philipp flog zwei „Freestyler 5“ und einen „Freestyler 3.5“. Lukas setzte auf drei „Pitbull 2“.

Am Samstag und Sonntag wurde das German Open F3f geflogen, ein hochkarätig besetzter Worldcup-Wettbewerb. Bereits hier konnte das Team eine beachtliche Leistung erzielen. Gewonnen hat verdienterweise der junge Franzose Sebastian Lanes, allerdings knapp dahinter Philipp auf Platz 2 und Lukas auf Platz 3. Stefan und Franz erreichten die Plätze 20 und 30. Die inoffizielle(!) Teamwertung ging auch an Österreich. Die Eröffnungsfeier der WM wurde am Sonntagabend beim Leuchtturm am Kap Arkona durchgeführt. Wie bereits 2012 an derselben Location, war es auch heuer eine absolut schöne und würdige Veranstaltung. Alle Teams wurden vorgestellt und ein kurzes Video mit Impressionen der jeweiligen Nationen auf den Leuchtturm projiziert. Das anschließende Bankett im Rügenhof war auch ausgezeichnet.

Am Montag ging´s dann los. Gestartet wurde am Goorer Berg mit Flugzeiten im Bereich von 50-60 Sekunden. So konnten am ersten Tag insgesamt 4 Runden geflogen werden, was eigentlich für ein Starterfeld mit 63 Piloten aus 21 Nationen und den recht schwachen Bedingungen an diesem Tag gar nicht so schlecht war. Der zweite Tag, ebenfalls am Goorer Berg, war dann schon etwas zäher… Der Wind wurde schwächer, die thermischen Einflüsse stärker. So kam es dann auch, dass der 6. Durchgang unterbrochen und nach einem Hangwechsel nach Dranske weitergeflogen werden musste. Allerdings konnte in Dranske auch nur ein Testpilot starten. Der Wind war zu schwach und viel zu schräg.

Tag 3 war geprägt von viel Warterei. Am Morgen konnten wir keinen Wind spüren und tatsächlich wurde der Start des Bewerbs an diesem Tag vom Contest Director Armin Hortzitz verschoben. So trafen wir uns erst gegen Mittag in Vitt. Erst am späten Nachmittag konnte bei Windgeschwindigkeiten um die 4m/s gestartet werden. Zuerst musste nach einem Protest von Team USA und Team Polen am Vortag die zweite Gruppe der 6. Runde erneut geflogen werden. Die noch verbliebene 3. Gruppe wurde zwar gestartet, konnte aber wieder nicht vollendet werden.

Wettertechnisch richtig gut wurde dann der Donnerstag. Zwar wieder in Vitt, aber diesmal mit Wind. Lukas und Philipp konnten sich so ein richtig spannendes Duell liefern und ihren Vorsprung auf die restlichen Teilnehmer ausbauen. Auf den Plätzen 3 bis 10 ging es sehr eng zu und nach jedem Durchgang wurde hier durchgemischt. Auch Stefan konnte an diesem Tag zeigen, was er kann und lieferte konstant seine Punkte. Leider musste er sich am Abend im letzten Durchgang des Tages von einem seiner Modelle verabschieden. Vermutlich aufgrund eines technischen Defekts segelte sein Impuls 2 nach einem kräftigen Wurf von Lukas wie auf Schienen in Richtung offenes Meer. Die Steuerung reagierte nicht und Stefan und die nach vorne eilenden Teilnehmer konnten nur machtlos zusehen, wie sein Modell nach einem wunderschönen Flug am Wasser aufschlug und umgehend in den Tiefen der Ostsee versankt.

Der Freitag führte uns wieder nach Goor. Philipp und Lukas konnten an diesem Tag ihren Vorsprung verteidigen, jedoch kamen die Konkurrenten etwas näher. Auch unser Vorsprung in der Teamwertung wurde etwas kleiner. Der letzte Durchgang dieses Tages, Runde 13, konnte nicht fertig geflogen werden. Die dritte Gruppe mit Philipp und dem Titelverteidiger Thorsten Folkers musste auf Samstag verschoben werden.

Showdown am Goorer Berg… So der letzte Tag dieser WM. Die Bedingungen waren sehr schwach und eigentlich hat niemand mehr damit gerechnet, dass noch geflogen werden konnte. Doch kurz vor Ablauf der Deadline frischte der Wind auf und die letzte Gruppe aus Runde 13 musste um etwa 11:30Uhr gestartet werden. Ich war während der ganzen WM nicht so nervös, wie beim Flug von Philipp in diesem Durchgang. Und ich denke Philipp und dem Rest des Teams ging es nicht anders…

Die Siegerehrung dieser WM war ein besonderes Highlight. Der ganze WM-Tross traf sich um 15:00Uhr in Putgarten zu einer Busfahrt an den Hafen von Sassnitz. Von dort aus ging es dann mit dem Schiff nach Binz und weiter nach Selin. Wir alle hatten so die Möglichkeit, gemütlich zusammenzusitzen und die vergangene Woche nochmal Revue passieren zu lassen. An der Seebrücke Selin angekommen gab es zuerst einen kleinen Sektempfang, ehe es hinauf in den Ballsaal zur eigentlichen Siegerehrung ging. Ich mache es kurz: Unser Pechvogel Stefan Fraundorfer konnte Platz 21 erreichen. Lukas Gaubatz landete letzten Endes auf Platz 2 ganz knapp hinter dem neuen Weltmeister Philipp Stary. Auf den dritten Platz reihte sich der Titelverteidiger aus Deutschland, Thorsten Folkers, ein. In der Teamwertung konnten wir den Titel nach Österreich holen. Zweiter wurde Deutschland und am dritten Platz sahen wir Frankreich.

Abschließend möchte ich ein großes Dankeschön sagen! Dankeschön an die perfekte Organisation der WM durch Erik Schufmann. Dankeschön für die ruhige und besonnene Wettbewerbsleitung durch Armin Hortzitz und Dankeschön an das ganze HelferInnen-Team, das diese Veranstaltung erst möglich gemacht hat. Nicht unerwähnt soll auch Monika Gewessler vom ÖAeC bleiben, die mir jederzeit rasch und unkompliziert weitergeholfen hat.

Es war mir eine Ehre, diese tolle Mannschaft als Teammanager durch die Weltmeisterschaft zu begleiten und wünsche Philipp alles Gute für seine Titelverteidigung 2020 in Frankreich.

Stefan Fraundorfer could already look back on successful world championship participations in the FAI class F5d, in F3f it was his first participation. For Lukas Gaubatz and me this was already the fourth World Championship in the F3f class.
The whole team arrived at our accommodation in Dranske on Friday, October 5th. On the same evening we went to the "Processing", the official inspection and acceptance of the models. Each pilot was allowed to register three models for the world championship. Stefan used three pieces of his own construction "Impuls 2". Philipp flew two "Freestyler 5" and one "Freestyler 3.5". Lukas set on three "Pitbull 2".
On Saturday and Sunday the German Open F3f was flown, a top-class World Cup competition. Already here the team could achieve a remarkable performance. Deservedly, the young Frenchman Sebastian Lanes won, but just behind him Philipp on place 2 and Lukas on place 3. Stefan and Franz reached places 20 and 30. The unofficial(!) team ranking also went to Austria. The opening ceremony of the World Championship took place on Sunday evening at the lighthouse at Cape Arkona. As already in 2012 at the same location, it was also this year an absolutely beautiful and worthy event. All teams were introduced and a short video with impressions of the respective nations was projected onto the lighthouse. The following banquet in the Rügenhof was also excellent.
On Monday we started. The start was at the Goorer Berg with flight times in the range of 50-60 seconds. So on the first day a total of 4 laps could be flown, which was actually not so bad for a starting field with 63 pilots from 21 nations and the quite weak conditions on this day. The second day, also at Goorer Berg, was a bit tougher... The wind became weaker, the thermal influences stronger. So it came that the 6th run had to be interrupted and after a change of slope to Dranske had to be flown on. However, only one test pilot could start in Dranske. The wind was too weak and much too slanted.
Day 3 was marked by a lot of waiting time. In the morning we couldn't feel any wind and actually the start of the competition was postponed by Contest Director Armin Hortzitz. So we met in Vitt around noon. Only in the late afternoon it was possible to start at wind speeds of about 4m/s. First, after a protest by Team USA and Team Poland the day before, the second group of the 6th round had to be flown again. The remaining 3rd group was started, but could not be completed again.
The weather was really good on Thursday. Again in Vitt, but this time with wind. Lukas and Philipp were able to fight a really exciting duel and extend their lead over the other participants. The places 3 to 10 were very tight and after each run there was a mix of the two. Stefan was also able to show what he can do on this day and constantly delivered his points. Unfortunately he had to say goodbye to one of his models in the evening in the last round of the day. Probably due to a technical defect his Impuls 2 sailed after a strong throw from Lukas like on rails towards the open sea. The steering did not react and Stefan and the participants hurrying forward could only watch powerless as his model hit the water after a wonderful flight and sank immediately into the depths of the Baltic Sea.
Friday took us back to Goor. Philipp and Lukas could defend their advantage on this day, but the competitors came a little closer. Also our advantage in the team ranking became a little smaller. The last round of this day, round 13, could not be finished. The third group with Philipp and the defending champion Thorsten Folkers had to be postponed to Saturday. 

Showdown at the Goorer Berg... So the last day of this world championship. The conditions were very weak and nobody expected to be able to fly any more. But shortly before the end of the deadline the wind was blowing up and the last group from lap 13 had to be started at about 11:30am. I wasn't as nervous during the whole world championship as I was during Philipp's flight in this round. And I think Philipp and the rest of the team couldn't help it...
The award ceremony of this world championship was a special highlight. The whole WC-truck met at 15:00 clock in Putgarten for a bus ride to the port of Sassnitz. From there it went then with the ship to Binz and further to Selin. All of us had the opportunity to sit together and review the past week again. Arrived at the sea bridge Selin there was first a small champagne reception, before it went up into the ballroom to the actual award ceremony. I make it short: Our unlucky Stefan Fraundorfer could reach place 21. Lukas Gaubatz ended up on 2nd place just behind the new world champion Philipp Stary. The defending champion from Germany, Thorsten Folkers, finished third. In the team ranking we could bring the title to Austria. Second was Germany and third was France.
Finally, I would like to say a big thank you! Thank you to Erik Schufmann for the perfect organisation of the World Championships. Thank you for the calm and prudent competition management by Armin Hortzitz and thank you to all the helpers who made this event possible. Monika Gewessler from the ÖAeC should not remain unmentioned either, as she helped me quickly and easily at all times.
It was an honour for me to accompany this great team as team manager through the World Championships and wish Philipp all the best for his title defence in France in 2020.
